Canal Place represents the first significant market-rate housing built in downtown Lowell since the decline of the city’s economic base in the nineteenth century. This complex of six mill buildings, formerly used for carpet weaving, is located in the heart of the Historic District adjacent to Lowell’s original locks and canals.
BSBA designed the industrial space to residential use by designing each unit with two levels to take advantage of the high ceilings. The living room, dining room, kitchen and half bath occupy the first level; two bedrooms, bath and laundry are on the second. The plan places 119 units around a six-story sky lit atrium. Tenant parking is provided in the basement.
